Lipids (fats & oils) are biomolecules that are very important for the proper functioning of our cells, tissues, and organs. Lipids play a crucial role in the function of our immune system, cardiovascular system, nervous system, memory, and the health of our skin. On the other hand, excessive consumption of calorie-rich foods, combined with a sedentary lifestyle, can result in unhealthy weight gain, leading to negative consequences for our health. Our body can synthesize many of its lipids, but some essential lipids must be obtained through our diet and are important for health. However, we must keep in mind that highly processed commercial food is often rich in trans-fats that can have some negative health effects if consumed excessively. Thus, no individual food is absolutely unhealthy and lipids themselves are not inherently bad. Balance and moderation are essential. Lipodrome and Know Your Fats! aim to illustrate these concepts through fun but educational board game for all the family.

NEWS ABOUT EpiLipidNET educational suite:
The board game Lipodrome was presented at the Xperimenta 2024 event by the Lipidomics Laboratory of Mass Spectrometry of the University of Aveiro (CEM-UA). Students from a variety of backgrounds participated in this program, which allowed them to investigate the connection between dietary decisions and overall health. The game allowed players to observe how different food choices can impact our health based on the lipids they contain.
This occasion made it possible for the EpiLipidNET COST Action and the Lipidomic Laboratory of CEM-UA to further contribute to public involvement and education in the complicated field of lipids. Additional initiatives are planned for the future, in association with Fábrica Centro Ciência Viva de Aveiro (https://www.ua.pt/pt/fabrica/saude-a-mesa-II).
